If you have a bad habit of putting off your routine dental exam at E.G.I. Dental, you are at increased risk of tooth decay. When a small cavity goes without treatment, it will gradually spread to compromise more and more of the surrounding tooth enamel.
In time, the compromised area can become too large to viably be treated with a standard dental filling. In a situation like this, Dr. Warren Cheung will likely recommend restoring the tooth enamel layer with a dental crown.
This will effectively replace the entire tooth enamel layer with an alternative material. Crowns are typically made from either gold, porcelain or a metallic alloy.
This restoration method has two distinct stages. During the first appointment, Dr. Warren Cheung will numb the tooth before using a special dental drill to remove the tooth enamel from the tooth to create an abutment. This a healthy sheath of dentin that protects the sensitive pulp and root within.
An impression of the abutment and surrounding teeth will be made. This will be sent to a dental lab to serve as a guide while the technicians work to create your new crown.
One of Dr. Warren Cheung’s staff members will call you to schedule a short follow-up appointment when the crown is ready. At this appointment, the temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented atop the abutment.
